Client Summary

Optimizing Gurdwara Spaces for Anand Karaj Ceremonies with 3D Scanning services for GNFA Gurdwara project in Columbia Pike, Silver Spring, MD 20904.

Location of the Project

Guru Nanak Foundation of America, 12917 Old Columbia Pike, Silver Spring, MD 20904.

Challenges

The existing layout of the Gurdwara, spanning 4,707 square feet, lacked dedicated space for conducting Anand Karaj ceremonies, which are integral to Sikh matrimonial rites. This absence of an exclusive area for such significant rituals presented challenges to the organization (Guru Nanak Foundation of America).

Furthermore, the platform on which the Guru Granth Sahib scripture was situated, being elevated on a stage, posed a logistical issue as per Sikh tradition, where the bride and groom are required to circumambulate the holy scriptures four times during the wedding ceremony. This setup hindered the smooth movement required during this ritual.

Solutions Provided

To address the challenge, the decision was made to reconstruct and expand the Gurdwara infrastructure. This solution required careful planning and execution to integrate the necessary space for Anand Karaj ceremonies seamlessly. Our 3D laser scanning workforce played a crucial role in accurately measuring and planning the expansion, ensuring precise adjustments to the existing structure.

Tejjy’s resolution workflow

Step 1: Scanning to capture the existing as-built conditions to understand the current situation—by using a Leica BLK 360 G1 camera.

Step 2: Convert the scan data to BIM using Revit software.

Step 3: Sent the schematic idea to management, got their feedback, and revised the drawings to ensure that the raised platform around the holy scriptures was eliminated to make it functional for the bride and groom to walk easily.

Services Utilized

The project extensively employed modern technologies to address the challenges at hand. The team utilized Leica’s BLK 360 G1 camera to capture precise measurements of the Gurdwara’s existing structure. Additionally, they deployed the scan-to-BIM technology assisted by Revit, which allowed for the conversion of scanned data into Building Information Models (BIMs). This integration of advanced tools facilitated the development of a comprehensive 3D BIM model, providing a solid foundation for precise planning and execution.

Conclusion

Through strategic organization, creative design, and meticulous execution, the Guru Nanak Foundation of America successfully accommodated Anand Karaj ceremonies within their Gurdwara premises.

This achievement not only addressed the immediate challenge but also demonstrated the organization’s commitment to preserving Sikh customs and traditions.

Furthermore, it showcased their ability to adapt to the evolving preferences and needs of their membership, ensuring the continued relevance and accessibility of their religious practices.
